"Private Eye" magazine has a regular feature called "number crunching". We expect you know the sort of thing: £28 billion - the biggest corporate loss in history suffered last year by Royal Bank of Scotland £2.8 million - bonus paid to Sir Fred Goodwin in his last year in charge of Royal Bank of Scotland We thought we'd do a bit of number crunching ourselves. The results aren't nearly so symmetrical, but they're revealing all the same … 22% - the figure by which the number of "middle managers" in local authorities rose in the last year alone 1,000 - the number of Birmingham City Council officials who earn more than £50,000 a year 2,700 - the number of local council jobs lost in the economic downturn 2.5 million - the number of people who last year were in court because they couldn't pay their council tax 3 million - the number of people who will soon be out of work either on this site or on the World Wide Web.
